Climate Action Plan

January 2026

As a Nursery we are committed to complying with the DfE requirement to move our early years setting towards net zero by 2050. Our climate action plan is a detailed plan enabling our setting to educate about sustainability through 4 key pillars;

  • Adaption and resilience

  • Biodiversity and nature

  • Climate education and green skills

  • Decarbonisation and net zero

We are working towards the Governments sustainability aims by:

  • spending everyday outside learning and understanding about growing, weather, seasonal changes, wildlife and planting.

  • Working with the Woodland Trust to plant tree’s annually on site, providing a visual aid to support Children’s understanding of growth and a place for wildlife to live.

  • Engaging parents in supporting our sustainability curriculum and projects.

  • Further improving our curriculum.

  • Engaging with local community projects.

Adaption & Resilience

We are committed to prepare for and respond to the impacts of climate change by:

  • Providing a second hand uniform shop, to reuse and recycle old uniforms that have been donated by parents.

  • Clearly labeled bins, highlighting the importance of recycling everyday. Our Willows children have a responsibility of putting food in the green waste bin as well as our ‘helping hands’ who help aid in clearing away after mealtimes.

  • Reducing the use of wipes and paper towels by using reusable cloths to wipe Children’s faces and energy efficient hand dryer in the Children’s toilets to dry their hands.

  • Ensuring at least two meals a week are vegan/vegetarian alongside reviewing our menu annually.

  • Taking trips to the local market to buy local produce to then eat at Nursery, this supports their growing and planting projects.

  • Reusing and recycling projects across all rooms encoring partnership with parents in supporting this, including junk modelling, watching the refuse collection and learning about the importance of recycling.

  • Monthly gardening trips to Honey Lane Care Home in the Spring/Summer months, to continue to spread the importance of looking after nature and its wildlife.

  • Clothes Recycling Container - Hillhouse School (joint car park) We advertise donating clothes to the recycling container where they will find a new home rather than be discarded with, with a focus on children’s clothes & uniforms.

  • Using a Titanium chopping board in the kitchen, to eliminate frequent replacements with plastic boards, providing benefits long term and cost effective.

Biodiversity & Nature

We are committed to protecting and enhancing nature and wildlife within the setting and its surrounding by:

  • Working with the Woodland Trust to plant tree’s annually to provide and home for wildlife alongside a visual aid to support Children’s understanding of growing.

  • Utilising and developing our sensory garden termly to plant, play and watch how things grow.

  • Each room has a bird feeder alongside a bird house to encourage habitation of baby birds in the Spring months. Its a great opportunity for the children to see lots of different birds from their classroom.

  • Seasonal walks to highlight the change in seasons and how it effects the nature and wildlife.

  • Being outside everyday. We have wet/snow suits for children to ensure children can be outside in all weathers. We have a lovely outside, green garden which encourages lots of wildlife all throughout the year. In the Spring and Summer months we have free flow learning and the doors remain open, with each patio extended to the classroom.

  • We have a water but on our patio which collects and enables us to reuse the water when watering the plants. The children are a huge part of watering plants in the garden.

  • We have a hedgehog house and hibernation station in our Sensory Garden to encourage hedgehogs to take shelter and keep safe.

  • We are planning to build a ‘Bug Hotel’ to provide a habitat for bugs to live and give children an opportunity to learn about lots of different insects whilst promoting a healthier outdoor ecosystem.

Decarbonisation and Net Zero

We have the following actions to measure and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, working towards net zero by:

  • Becoming more energy efficient with LED light bulbs, automatic sensors to turn off any lights when room not in use and turning off lights in a room that is not in use.

  • Promoting our buggy & scooter shelter at the front of the building, to encourage parents to walk with their children to Nursery. Our car park is now closed for parents, which should encourage parents to walk where possible.

  • Reducing waste & recycling. We don’t have black bag waste so everything on site can be recycled with every bin clearly labeled. We have clear reusable bottles to top up washing up liquid when required, we also do the same with hand wash, to reduce the use of single use plastic.

  • We make our own anti bacterial solution which is made every Monday to use for the rest of the week, again avoiding single use plastic and a more eco solution.

  • The heating is on summer/winter months and only comes on when temperate goes below a certain temperature. When the doors to the patio are open the heating goes off, reducing heat waste and energy use.

Climate Education & Green Skills

We are committed to understand climate change, sustainability and develop relevant skills by:

  • Planning termly activities that teach children about nature and the world.

  • Learning more about climate change so we can share the information with the children.
